Harry Potter is a teenager's universe, but a somewhat dark one
and with some well characterised adults
to add to the mix,
which is probably why
it has such an extensive adult following. The books centre on Harry, and his
friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and their allies such as Albus
Dumbledore, Rubeu s Hagrid and Minevera McGonagall, but have some
wonderfully ambivalent characters like Severus Snape (as the kind of teacher you
hope never, ever to encounter) and some downright evil
characters such as Death Eater Lucius Malfoy and, of course, Voldemort, the dark lord. It is
essentially a story about good and evil with young Harry as the reluctant hero
and Voldemort as the repulsive and powerful villain. The setting is both muggle
and magical Britain, Hogwarts is in Scotland possibly near Aberdeen, Diagon
Alley and the Ministry of Magic are based in London, while Harry lives at 4
Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey (South England) with his Aunt Petunia and Uncle
Vernon and piggish cousin, Dudley. The Dursley's are almost a
comic book creation of spite and malice, and the surprise is not that Harry is
so resourceful and independent after such a neglected and abusive up bringing,
but that Harry manages to remain so normal.
Most of the recommendations below are
slash Harry/Draco - I have a fondness for
enemies colliding and eventually coming together, with some gen and het (mostly
Ron/Hermione alongside H/D). While I am not naive
enough to believe that young teens do not indulge in sex before the magical age
of 16/17 - hey, I was a teenager - I really don't wish to read about it, so all
of my recs take place when Harry et al are at least 16 (age of consent in the UK),
but most recs are Post Hogwarts, that is with the characters as
adults particularly now the last book has been published.

A Slytherin In Gryffindor Clothing by
maheliem Draco hits
his head and wakes to find himself in another world where he's a Gryffindor
and Harry Potter is a Slytherin. This is both an interesting and fun story.
Draco finds himself in Hogwarts that's not his, although only he appears
have been changed. The Harry Potter here is not a hero, and doesn't have a
lightening scar on his forehead. Plus he's a Slytherin, but Draco slowly
finds out that he is still the same Harry when given the chance to be
heroic, Funnily enough, Draco finds out that he has the potential to be
heroic also.
-
Angels and Devils by
Beren. Harry defeated Voldemort: his act
of heroism is famous throughout the wizarding world. He's trying to finish
his final year at Hogwarts in peace, but something peculiar is happening to
him, something he never would have expected. It's all rather embarrassing
and making his life very complicated. Draco as Veela fics are something
of a cliché in this fandom. Some are very badly written, a few are fun and
one or two like this one are clever and original.
-
Beautiful_World by
Cinnamon. Draco is afraid of living and
Harry is afraid of dying, but sometimes the choice isn't offered. Draco's
got to learn what it is to really live, while showing Harry how beautiful
the world really is when you're not too scared to see it. Harry learns
something about himself, something that changes the way he views the world
and his life. He also starts up a strange friendship with someone totally
unexpected, Draco Malfoy. It is Draco who sustains him and supports him
during the worst moments of his life. This is a very moving story that
develops the Harry/Draco relationship gently and beautifully. I have a few
problems with it, Dumbledore's and Sirius' action in telling Harry his fate
in such a manner and being so unsympathetic with his reaction towards it for
a start, but nethertheless, this story will remain with me, and I guarantee
the ending will make you cry.
- Bond by
Anna
Fugazzi A rather original and intriguing forced bonding story that
twists and turns all over the place and keeps both Harry and Draco very much
in character.
- Business as Usual
by nishizono This is the tale of how Harry Potter rescued Draco
Malfoy from an existential crisis, wherein Draco is a chav, Ron's sexual
orientation is questioned, Snape takes points for the abject abuse of
alliteration, and our hero is prone to random tourettic fits in the middle
of the Great Hall. The author states that this isn't crack, I'm not too
sure about that, but it sure is hilarious.
- Checkmating by
mahaliem. In hopes of convincing Voldemort supporters to change
sides, Ron decides that he and Harry should pair off with Slytherins. This made me laugh and enjoyed it being in Ron's pov for a change.
- Commencement
by Aja is a post war, leaving Hogwarts 'romantic' tale. Beautifully
written and the set up between Harry and Draco is so well depicted I could
both feel and believe it.
-
Corruption by
Beren and the sequels Distortion and Alteration
revolve around the premise that Voldemort has captured Harry and for his own
twisted reasons has chosen not to kill him outright. Revenge in the Dark
Lord's mind requires a fate worse than death and Harry is about to find out
what that is. Beren takes us on a different path with a much changed Harry
who, despite all that has been done to him, retains enough of his humanity
to save Draco and to feel grief and despair at what he has done and what he
has become. Carvedwood has written an authorised companion piece
Draco's Story:
Corruption and it is both well written and similar in style to Beren's
original story.
- Doppelganger
by Vichan or
here Harry sees himself in a mirror with a green towel. Draco is nice to him one
second, and his typical self the next. What does it all mean? A
Slytherin Harry and his 'mate' Draco Lucius fall into Harry's world and turn
it upside down. For this Harry has defeated Voldemort, this Harry is very
much in love with his Draco, and Draco Lucius is all together easier and
more likable than the Draco Malfoy of his universe. A WIP. Or available or

Dream Verse by
Really Sunny It began innocently enough is the
start of this long involved series. Harry decide that he needs to understand
Draco and spends his time researching everything about him. Slowly, he
learns and much of what he learns frightens him, he also begins to fall in
love. Meanwhile, Draco is not as oblivious as Harry thinks. Once you
have finished, it is worth reading the Q & As just to see how well plotted
the series was.
-
Draco
Malfoy and the Tome of Entrapment by Saber Shadowcat. Draco
took a deep breath and let it out slowly. It sucked being in love. This
is a great preslash novel from Draco's pov with great portrayals of Harry,
Draco, Hermione, Ron, Pansy and, especially, Neville.
- Eclipse by
Mijan.
Power, Prestige, and Sweet Revenge. What's it like when you finally have
everything you've ever wanted, right at your fingertips, and your entire
world turns upside down? Draco Malfoy is about to find out, and the answer
will take him through hell and back. An excellent, beautifully written
story that takes time to show the changes in Draco that make Harry's
willingness to trust and eventually befriend him totally believable. Harry
and Draco both suffer considerable hardship as they struggle together to
return to Hogwarts. (note, Mijan is also called PheonixSong). Here is
Eclipse:
Interlude. The interlude takes place between chapters 8 and 9 of
"Eclipse", specifically just after Draco sends Biddy to Hogwarts.
- Genesis

Gold Tinted Spectacles by
Beren or
here
Harry's sixth year has come and gone, part of him has been alone because
of everything he knows and everything he has seen. As his seventh year dawns
he's looking for something and he's not sure what but he knows it's out
there. Things start to look interesting when Draco Malfoy becomes involved.
A long, involved and enjoyable love story with a strong plot and well
constructed history.
- Hall of Mirrors
by Ella Bane. In the summer before Harry Potter's sixth year, he
confronts a frightfully suspicious wizarding world, where friends are
strangers, mirrors hide secrets, and enemies become lovers. This has an
intriguing and original plot and a wonderful description of the slowly
developing relationship between Harry and Draco.
- Harry Potter and the Slytherin Connection by
KrystalRoze or
here It's
Harry's fifth year and he's finally able to escape the Dursleys only to find
that Voldemort has other plans. After numerous failed attempts to rid
himself of the Gryffindor brat, Lord Voldemort now knows he must change
tactics. This is the start of a four part series. It is not H/D, it's
not slash, but there is a slowly developing and beautifully depicted
friendship between Harry and Draco that I found both credible and highly
enjoyable. The pairing is eventually Harry/Ginny, but, to be honest, this
could almost be called gen because while Ginny is obviously highly important
to Harry, the whole relationship is incredibly low key particularly in
comparison to both the Harry/Voldemort relationship and Harry's relationship
with his friends. I found manipulative Voldemort fascinating and I very much
liked this Harry. The other parts are
Harry Potter and the
Unexpected Inheritance, Harry Potter and the Trelawney Prophecy,
Harry Potter and Salazar's
Talisman.

Annie
is a funny piece of narrative and observation from Ron's pov.
-
Invisible to see
by Rebecca Lizard. Draco comes to terms with
some bad decisions, Harry faces some rather unpalatable facts and Voldemort
is up to his tricks. This is a well written and intriguing story with a
very clever use of Hogwarts itself.
- Irresistible
Poison by Rhysenn. Under the influence of a love potion, Draco
learns that poison doesn't always bring death -- there are other ways to
suffer and live. Chemical emotion runs feverish as Harry and Draco discover
the intoxication of love. Harry and Draco are in their last year at
Hogwarts, still enemies until Draco makes a terrible mistake and ends up
taking a love potion that affects his feeling towards Harry. Harry's
distrust and dislike of Draco are tested as he comes to understand the agony
Draco is going through and, with the reluctant help of Hermione, tries to
help Draco counteract the spell. This long, intricate story touches on love,
loyalty, compassion, hatred, betrayal and friendship and is an excellent
read.

does Harry. A very unromantic and amusing look at a potential
Harry/Draco relationship where they still hate each other, but find the
other sexy!
-
It Started with a Spin by Maxine Chan
It started with the spin
of a bottle, and now Harry and Draco have gotten themselves so far into
their own game there's almost no way out again. Except to keep playing. A highly enjoyable and original way of bringing Harry and Draco together.
- Lustre by
Calico and Julad. Draco's is extremely proud of the wonderful gift
his father has sent him for his 16th birthday, but slowly he comes to
realise that there is far more to the gift than meets the eye and he needs
someone to explain just what is going on and what exactly his father
intends. He needs someone who can speak Parseltongue. He needs Harry Potter.
A very in character Draco and a strong assertive Harry.
- Marked by
S-Star.
Draco wants everyone to keep off his property... Short, not
particularly sweet, but rather amusing and pretty clever. *g*
- Matinee

no one is a round to record it, but this time... A funny story with a
great ending.
-
Moonlight Fair by
Flutesong or
here or

Draco Malfoy grows up. A very interesting and rather clever
look at a Year 7 Draco through his own introspective eyes and through other
eyes, in particular Harry's.
- Moving
Company by Lady Lance, When Harry becomes Slytherin,
everything changes. Old relationships end, new bonds are formed. This is
one of the best 'Harry gets resorted' stories I've read. It takes a slow
look at Harry's reactions to the move as well as those of the people around
him.
- Naked Quidditch
by Anya (gennish, ok, mild sexual innuendos of all kinds). A
hilarious tale of the result of the Weasley twins losing a bet. The story is
told via e-mails and is howlingly funny at times. The ending falls a little
flat, but the whole story left me grinning.
- No Need
to Talk by furiosity. Sometimes a change of perspective is all
that is needed to change your mind. A very realisticdescription of how
and why Draco changed sides.
- Not Just
Another, 'Oh no, Draco's a Veela story' by Relle is a funny
parody of Frizzy's somewhat sweet and simpering

Objects of Desire by
Azrael. The dream team sign a magical
contract promising to lose their virginities within the year, they soon fix
on the objects of their desires, but will the bitterness left in the wake of
the war prove too hurtful for love to exist? HG/SS, HP/DM. This is a
superbly written and very long story. Azreal has imagination, flair and a
deft touch. Her 'heroes' are young adults matured by the ferocity of the war
and struggling to make sense of adulthood. I even bought her Snape/Hermione,
a pairing I've never considered and never wanted to read (I have this
problem with the age difference, but the Hermione portrayed certainly knows
what she wants). I have to admit to skimming some of the SS/HG stuff,
particularly the sex, but I liked her kick arse Hermione. Ron's story made
me cry, while Harry and Draco are fascinating in their love and insecurity.
Also Azreal has written a devious, arrogant, evil, selfish Lucius who
happens to love his son above everything, and that plot thread is absorbing.
- Only
your shadow by PhoenixSong (gen). Draco discovers that it's
easy to hate someone from a distance. When you talk to a person up close
things can look very, very different. A very angsty story from Draco's
point of view. Very well written with a hurting Harry into the bargain.
- Phoenix Song
by xylodemon Certain situations force Draco to reevaluate his
alliances. He turns to his former enemies, and finds love in an unexpected
place. A very long and rewarding read with some great characterisations
not only of Harry and Draco, of Ron, Hermione, Lupin and many other. I was
particularly fond of Ginny while Snape was wonderfully nasty, vile and
malicious yet still able to show his real concern for Draco
-
Ruses by Empress of the Eclipse.
After his father challenges
him, Draco ends up inviting Harry to his house for the summer. But what
SHOULD have been a fairly harmless visit goes horribly wrong.A very
different take on how Harry and Draco might become friends and then lovers
with some fascinating twists, a somewhat out of control Harry and a cover up
between the boys that almost destroys them.
- Sacrifices Arc by
Lightning on the Wave
or here.
Saving Connor begins a seven book AU called the
Sacrifices Arc of Harry Potter's school years where Harry's twin
Connor (bearing a heart-shaped scar) is acknowledged as the Boy-Who-Lived.
I'm came in half way through book three and was so intrigued I quickly read
the first two books. This is immensely well plotted and written. It is worth
reading the author's blurb on the whole arc at her authors page on ffnet or
skyehawke. It also goes to show that good stuff can be found at a ffnet! *g*
The H/D begins in the later years and is very present in Book 7, but Harry
and Draco are very good friends throughout.. The series consists of
Saving Conner - Year1,
No Mouth But Some Serpent's
- Year 2, Comes Out at
Darkness Morn - Year 3,
Freedom and Not Peace -
Year 4, The Wind that Shakes the
Sea and Stars - Year 5, A Song in Time of Revolution -
Year 6 and I Am Also Thy Brother -
Year 7. I can't emphasise how absolutely superb these books are and how they
get even better as time progresses. Yes, Harry is a very strong wizard, but
the emotional fall out of his upbringing along with the plotting of his
enemies, and those one would consider to be his friends, mean that nothing
is a walk over for him and he struggles to survive in the maelstrom around
him. Draco is beautifully conceived with much of the arrogance and conceit
of the original tempered by his real love for Harry and the lessons he
learns along the way. Each character in these books is well crafted and
interesting. She talks further about her stories here

- Seamus is
Seamus and You are Yourself by Ari Munami is funny, somewhat
silly and highly improbable - Harry returns to school at the beginning of
the sixth year with 'it' in spades. Written in varying points of view,
this has the most wonderful description of a an obsessed, baffled,
infuriated and protective Draco. I still snigger at this thought from Draco
in regards to his musings about wanting to get to know Harry "I don't just
want to fuck Potter. I want to *know* him. Jesus. You know how hard that is
for me to admit to? I'm not meant to feel like this, I wasn't built this
way. But every time I get close to him the fucking tiniest violin in the
world starts playing its little melody just for me. The birds start singing.
It's a wonderful fucking day."
-
Snakes And Lions by
GatewayGirl When Ron and Hermione get
together, they notice only each other. A nightmare prompts Harry to return
alone to the empty Chamber of Secrets, and leads to a new look at an old
enemy. This is a long, 43 chapters, superbly written and plotted tale of
a surprising friendship which develops and grows despite all obstacles put
in its way. The Harry and Draco depicted here feel so very possible and very
much in character, and I loved her Hermione. I really enjoyed it and look
forward to the promised sequel.
- Snatch
by didntyoupotter Harry is comatose, Hermione and Ron aren't much
help, and Draco isn't sure about anything anymore. Beautiful and
bittersweet.
-
Something Impossible by
Cassandra Claire. Draoc's twisted,
paranoid and highly egotistical view of the world is absolutely hilarious,
and this line sums of the whole mood of the piece - It was even better than
kissing his own reflection in the mirror, which Draco knew because he had
tried it on several occasions - snigger! Mind you, I thought at first
that Harry and his backbone had parted company, but, thankfully, it grew
back very quickly.
-
Somnio Salvus by
Invisibabe. Year Six at Hogwarts, and Draco
finds a way to spy on Harry's deepest fears. But will he use this knowledge
to gain power over Harry, or to change his own destiny. This story has
many features that are typical of H/D, but I liked the way Lucius was
portrayed as a loving father rather than the hateful disciplinary of so much
fiction. The idea of Draco invading Harry's dreams to cause harm, but being
shocked at what he discovers and how that alters his whole outlook on life
was nicely done.
- Tempus
by Ravenna C Tan. Students at Hogwarts have always been warned
about corridors that appear and disappear. Did you ever wonder where they
go? Or when? Harry thinks he is late to his seventh year potions class, but
he turns out to be more than seventy years early. A very well plotted
and thought through story that is both exciting and intriguing. The Draco
presented was sufficiently like present day Draco Malfoy to keep my interest
yet the circumstances of his time and for his Harry's first meeting so
different that their relationship was totally believable and highly
enjoyable.
- Tempus Fugit by
Stylophile A monumental cock-up in Potions leaves Harry and Draco
contending with more than mutual enmity, and a strong desire to utter all
manner of profanities. What could have been a cliché its done
beautifully in this story.
- The
Annointed by C Dumbledore. Voldemort appoints 12 students to
aid in the planned siege on Hogwarts. Lucius is dead, Draco is Lord Malfoy.
A long intriguing read giving us a plausible reason for Draco's change
of allegiance and some nice interaction between the Golden trio and Draco.
-
The
Flight of The Draco Malfoy by ZS. The seventh years try their
hands at Animagus Transfiguration. This is fun and gives a plausible
reason for Harry and Draco actually bonding.
- The If Sieve by
Cathy The device sat on Draco's bed, denting the heavy green quilt
into a rumpled dip. It looked a little like a Pensieve: a solid stone bowl
filled with quivery silver liquid. This is a very enjoyable read and I
really enjoyed the possible 'may be's or what if's depicted. The sequel,
another highly enjoyable read, is
Mirror Maze
- The Malfoy Guide
to Productive Extortion by Mirabelle. Harry's either drunk and
horny or drunk and cuddly, depending on your point of view. Ron's straight
but no one holds it against him. Draco could hand out detentions, but he has
a better idea. I've never found the thought of a H/D/R threesome in
anyway sexy, but this story is more comedy than anything else and Harry is
utterly adorable yet quite ruthless. Draco is wonderfully snide initially
until he starts thinking with his dick, Ron is amusing while Hermione's
brief entry just about steals the show! Sexy in a humorous way.
-
The Misadventure of Draco Malfoy Ferret
by sabershadowkat.
Crackfic Snape turns Draco into a ferret for his own protection. He
would've been safer with the Dark Lord. I found this story highly
amusing, but with an undercurrent of angst and pain which made it rather
good. It is about Draco as a ferret, and he is beautifully written and well
characterised, but it is also about Harry as both very human and all round
hero good guy as seen through Draco's eyes. I enjoyed her Draco, but adored
her Harry.
- The Shadow
of His Wings by Mirabella. In which Evil faces an insurrection.
Good faces an unexpected betrayal, and Harry means to find out which side
Draco is on. A very interesting story with a very well conceived plot
and a beautifully depicted universe.
-
The Summer After by
Silent Auror or
here. The first
story I read that was based on HBP/Book 6. It is a hurt/comfort story, and
is, as usual with this author's work, a very good read.
- Transformation
by Amalin. Harry/Draco, with a mild shot of Harry/Tonks. In
Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts, he must face the consequences of the attack
on the Department of Mysteries and the effects of Voldemort's return. And in
doing so, he finds that even your enemies can teach you valuable lessons -
about the world, and about yourself. A long enjoyable read with a
fascinating and believable relationship depicted between Harry and Draco.
- Unthinkable Thoughts
by Aidan Lynch. Harry and Draco slowly overcome their enmity as
forces beyond their control played with their emotions and push them
together. The author takes his time building up to their acknowledgement
of their emotions, and creates considerable angst, particularly for Harry,
while doing so. The story makes great use of Hermione, Ron and the rest of
Harry's Gryffindor friends and is very well written, detailed and romantic.
- View Askew
by Brenda Antrim. Voldemort opens up an unusual channel of communication
between Harry and Draco. Draco doesn't react well. Written from Draco's
POV and very much as a third person narrative, this story has some very
amusing asides, as well as some pretty scary visions.
- Walking the
Line by Silent Auror. Sixth year is over and Draco Malfoy is
on the run. The war is on and an unwanted assignment is forced upon him by
the only people he trusts - and a one-time arch-enemy just may be out to
kill him. This is very well written and intriguing as we watch the
relationship change and evolve between Harry and Draco through Draco's eyes.
Alongside the beautifully detailed relationship is an exciting story of the
chase to destroy the horcruxes and finally beat Voldemort and it is a very
good and rewarding read.

When the Black Veil
